Maurice E. Mathieu
January 4, 1945 - December 20, 2018
AUBURN – Maurice E. Mathieu, 73, a longtime resident of Lewiston passed away peacefully Thursday, December 20th with his brother, Robert by his side at the Androscoggin Hospice House following a short illness. He was born in Lewiston, January 4, 1945 the son of Charles and Juliette (Gosselin) Mathieu as well as a stepmother, Vera Mathieu. Maurice received his education in local schools and was a 1962 graduate of Lewiston High School. After graduating, he joined the United States Air Force where he served 21 years until his retirement 1983. He later worked at the Brunswick Naval Air Station Commissary for several years. He was a faithful member of the local AA Chapter, and helped many who suffered this terrible disease of alcoholism. His own sobriety was continuous for 39 years, and his favorite saying was. “Happy, joyous, and free. Keep coming back.” Maurice enjoyed helping others not only at AA, but throughout his life. He will be sadly missed by all his friends , family, and all who knew him. Survivors include one brother, Robert Mathieu, two sisters, Charlene Mathieu, and Kathy Charpentier and husband Gary; one brother James O’Donald and wife Helen, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Maurice’s family would like to thank Central Maine Medical Center and the Hospice House for keeping him comfortable and helping his family during his illness. The family also wishes to thank his many friends who also gave moral support during this time. Military honors will be held 12:00PM Sunday December 30th at the funeral home.
