Mr. Winston S. Greaton

August 14, 1921 - November 13, 2017

SCARBOROUGH- Winston Spencer Greaton 96, a resident of Schooner Estates in Auburn passed away peacefully Monday November 13th at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough following a short illness. He was the son of Everett Fred and Rachel Whittemore Greaton, was born August 14, 1921 in Auburn ME. He always spoke of how he could walk from his home on Orchard street to school, Lake Street, Webster Grammar, Edward Little HS (class of 1939), and even Bates College, where he received his BA in 1943. Winston was the first from Bates College to enlist in the US Army during WWII. He served in the CBI (China, Burma, India) theater and was honorably discharged on March 27, 1946. He married the “love of my life”, Mary E. Wood at the Araxine Wilkins Sawyer Memorial in Greene, Maine on June 4, 1952. They were truly blest with 3 sons, of whom 2 survive. Winston ran his own Mail-Order business consisting of Maine seafood (SEAWIN). He was then employed by First National Stores from 1950 to 1978. He was Personnel Manager in Portland until 1965 at which time he was transferred to Somerville, MA as Corporate Employee Benefits Manager. In 1979, Winston moved back to his home state as Employee Benefits Manager at Great Northern Paper in Millinocket. After retiring in 1986, he moved south to Lewiston. Winston held various offices in the Gideons International in MA and Maine which included past President of the State of Maine Gideons. Winston was always active in Church frequently serving as a Deacon, Trustee, Moderator or President. In Portland he was a member of Central Square Baptist Church. In North Reading MA he was a member of First Baptist Church. In Millinocket he was a member of First Baptist and then Faith Baptist where he also led a men’s weekly bible study. At Court Street Baptist in Auburn, in addition to other roles he was also active in the Young at Heart Fellowship serving as president. He served in leadership roles with the Boy Scouts in Portland. He was an active member and chaplain of the WWII Veterans group, CBI Basha in Maine. A lifelong fan of the Boston Braves, he has been a staunch supporter of the Boston Braves Historical Association. July 2007 he was fortunate to visit the Boston Braves Museum in Atlanta, GA as well as a complete tour of the Atlanta Braves facilities. Survivors include two sons, Everett and Kathy Bannerman (Los Angeles ,Calf.) and Robert, Jana and their daughter Hannah (Seattle,Wash.) James’ widow, Cindy (Portland) and their son Nat of ( Portland) daughter Rachel (South Portland) and Matt Patterson and their son Hazen, and daughter Cadence as well as nephews, John and Lindy Wood (Turner) Alan and Sheila Wood (Greene) and Mark and Judith Wood (Poland) He is predeceased by his parents, sister Roberta, son James and wife Mary.
