Sister Lorette L. Rancourt, O.S.U.

LEWISTON- Sister Lorette Rancourt, O.S.U., 96, also known as Sister Mary Henry, died peacefully in the company of her two nieces and her Ursuline Sisters at D’Youville Pavilion in Lewiston, Maine, on Tuesday, February 9, 2016. She was born in Waterville, Maine on June 1, 1919, the daughter of the late Henry W. and Celina (Rousseau) Rancourt. Sister Lorette grew up in Waterville, Maine where she attended elementary and secondary school. After study at Farmington State College, she entered the Ursuline Sisters on January 29, 1947 and made her vows on September 7, 1949. Subsequent education came through the College of New Rochelle in New York, Providence College in Providence, Rhode Island, the University of Maine and Boston College. She also did special studies in Braille. Her education and her natural gifts made her a strong elementary teacher, serving in Waterville, Sanford and Skowhegan in Maine; Springfield in Massachusetts; and the Bronx in New York. She claimed proudly that there was no student she could not teach to read. She is survived by four devoted nieces Camilla Corson, Geraldine Maheu, Mary Ann Paquet and Estelle Quimby. Besides her parents, she is predeceased by a sister Cleora Guerette; and by two brothers Rev. Roland Rancourt and Camille Rancourt. Her life will be celebrated with a Mass of Resurrection in the chapel at St. Mary’s Residence at 100 Campus Avenue in Lewiston, Maine on February 23, 2016 at 10:30 AM with a simple memorial gathering beginning at 9:30 AM. Burial will be held in the spring at the Ursuline Sisters Cemetery at 1 Angela Way in Waterville, Maine. Memorial gifts may be made to the Mount Merici Academy or to the Retired Ursuline Sisters of Maine and Massachusetts in care of Sister Angela Krippendorf, 100 Campus Avenue, #211, Lewiston, Maine 04240.
