Mrs. Sheila Cooper Walton
April 27, 1948 - December 26, 2015
Lewiston - Sheila Cooper Walton, 67, of Lewiston passed away peacefully on Sunday December 27th at CCMC with her family by her side. She was the daughter of the late Frank and Stella Korytko Cooper. Sheila attended local schools and graduated from LHS in 1966 where she was head majorette, she received a BS degree from Gorham State Teachers College and an Associate degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Maine in Augusta. She taught 1st grade in the Lewiston school system for 25 years at Coburn, Jordan, Multi-Purpose, and Montello schools. She owned O'Sheil's Irish Pub in Lewiston with her husband, Charlie who she married on St. Patrick's Day March 17, 1984 at St. Patrick's Chapel. She worked at Bates College from 1995 to 2013 in the Security and Admissions Office. A certified coach and judge with the United States Twirling Association, she began her baton twirling career at an early age. She went on to win many championships in the State of Maine and a 4th place medal on the National level. While in high school she started her own baton twirling school which she operated for over 30 years. Throughout the years many of the athletes she coached went on to win state titles. In the latter years she was joined by former student, and close friend, Pauline Lebrecque Moreau operating "Champions Choice Twirling Studio. Sheila also worked with the LHS Band, Majorettes, and Drill Team. She was also involved with the Maine Junior Miss Pageant as a Choreographer and MC with her husband for many years. Sheila enjoyed trips to Aruba with Charlie each year to celebrate their anniversary, the casinos, and going to baton camp with with her special friends and the Silver Bullets! She was a founding member and past president of the Northern New England Baton Twirling Council that is now the Maine Baton Twirling Council. She is survivied by her husband, Charles Walton; sister, Colleen and husband, Claude Rioux, of Ft. Charlotte, Fla.; sisters-in-law, Sylvia Crafts of Lisbon Falls and Meredith Michaelis and Bob Kelly of Natick, Mass.; stepdaughter, Heather Walton Fortier and husband, Ray; and three grandchildren, Danika Lamontagne, Amanda and Raymond Fortier; nephews, Michael Michaelis and wife, Jennifer, Travis Crafts and wife, Kelly, and Brandon Crafts; and a special niece and nephew, Angela Luettel and husband, Chad, and Jack Rioux and wife, Lisa; great-grandnieces, Heleana, Eva, Payton, Emma and Caitlin; and great-grandnephews, Bryson and William. Sheila was a member of the United States Twirling Association, Maine Baton Twirling Council, Ladies Auxillary-American Legion Post 31 and a member of the former St. Patrick's Church and now a member of the Prince of Peace Parish at Holy Family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday December 31st 11:00 AM at Holy Family Church Sabattus St.Private burial will be held later in the Spring at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
