Mr. Ernest O. Cobb

July 30, 1928 - October 16, 2015

Ernest O. Cobb (Ernie or Cobbie) of Auburn passed on Friday October 16 at the Maine Veteran’s Home in South Paris, ME. He was born in Auburn on July 30, 1928, the son of Ruth Swift and Ernest O. Cobb. He grew up in Auburn and graduated from Edward Little High School in 1946. Directly after graduating he enlisted in the US Navy where he served for two years. He attended Coburn Classical Institute in Waterville, ME in 1949 before joining the US Air Force. After a brief stint he joined the US Army in 1951. He served in the Korean War and rose to the rank of Sergeant First Class before being honorably discharged in 1954. He married Therese M. Poitras in 1956. Together they raised two children, Tracey and Eric. He owned and operated Audio Services in Auburn. For over 45 years, Ernie announced harness racing at various fairs across Maine and New Hampshire. He played an integral part in supporting local sports organizations such as the Auburn Aces and Auburn Suburban Little League. He umpired many games in both Auburn and Lewiston and traveled with the ASLL to Gary, IN to announce the Little League World Series. Known as “The Voice of Maine,” Ernie announced the boys and girls basketball games at Edward Little for many years. He was a long-running secretary for the Auburn Exchange Club and was tenacious in his fund-raising efforts. He was Auburn Citizen of the Year in 1983. After the passing of his first wife Therese, Ernie was remarried in 1998 to Dorothy L. Jordan. Together they spent many winters in Florida. He was very active in the Great Outdoors community in Titusville, FL and enjoyed maintaining the sound system both at the local church and The Manor. He enjoyed many rounds of golf with friends and family as well as playing cards with his cribbage buddies. He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Dorothy Cobb; daughter Tracey Schepman and her husband Steven of Ellensburg, WA; son Eric Cobb and his wife Beryle Martin of Auburn; grandchildren Danielle Boley and her husband Jordan, Christopher Schepman, William Cobb and his wife Erin, Stephen Cobb, and Katherine Cobb; several great-grandchildren; nephews David Wood and Greg Wilkinson as well as several other nieces and nephews; and step-children Scott Jordan, Raymond Jordan, Linda Whitney, Susan Nattress and Kimberly Daboo. He was predeceased by his mother Ruth, father Ernest, wife Therese, and siblings Frances, Phyllis, Laura and Donald. The family would like to thank The Maine Veterans Home staff of unit B, especially nurses Amy, Mary and Jessica for their exemplary and compassionate care. Funeral services honoring Ernie's life will be held Tuesday October 20th 12:00 Noon with Reverend Linda Gard officiating. Graveside committal prayers along with military honors to follow at Mt.Auburn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Maine Veterans Home c/o Recreation Committee, 477 High St., S. Paris, ME 04281 or First Congregational Church 19 Gloucester Hill Rd, New Gloucester, ME 04260. Family and friends are invited to visit Tuesday October 20th from 9:00AM until the time of service at the PINTTE DILLINGHAM & LYNCH FUNERAL HOME 305 Alfred Plourde Parkway, Lewiston, 784-4023
